The Mexican band Cast has an established visual vocabulary where the harlequin represents forces of imagination and creation. As it was expressed to me, "he shows things to the people."

In "Beyond Reality" the harlequin is combined with an "Aqualung" styled character representing the day-to-day of human existence. While new possibilities are budding on one side, the scroll of human wisdom is being mangled in the worn, chipped gears of ill-conceived mechinations on the other.

With the exception of the large gears in the back, all of the circular forms on the left of the painting are mirrored on the right.
